MEET THE TEAM

Head of Learning Support and SENCO

Mrs Higham

I am the Head of Learning Support and SENDCO. I am passionate about helping all students to reach their full potential and develop into extraordinary young people. My role is all about supporting students to have the best learning experience during their time at Tarleton Academy and making sure their needs are met. I work with the pupils, parents, teachers and the whole pastoral team to help with strategies to support students. I regularly meet students to discuss what support they need and challenge and support them in their learning journey.

Inclusion Manager

Mrs Croskell

My name is Nikki Croskell and I am the Inclusion Manager in school. I have been involved in SEND work since 2007 and I am passionate about securing the very best outcomes for our SEND students. My strengths lie in supporting the SENCO, Mrs Higham, and the Trust Inclusion Manger, Mrs Batey, in school with the processes and the associated paperwork required to get as much support in place as possible to empower the students to achieve their potential.

The learning support team work closely with teachers to offer support with strategies for interventions with students. Subject based intervention is usually provided by subject specialist staff, although most intervention takes place within the teaching classroom.

In some cases a Passport for Learning is made for a student. This is developed with the student and gives teachers strategies to support them as an individual in lessons and targets the student is working on.

Nurture Group

Generally, In Year 7 and 8 there is a Nurture Group for each year group. It is a small number of students (up to 10) who are identified as needing additional intensive support to allow them to access the mainstream curriculum more successfully. Students are assessed on their vulnerability, academic, emotional and behavioural difficulties.

Special Educational Needs & Disability

The Lancashire SEND Partnership was formed following the Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) joint inspection of special educational needs and disability (SEND) services in our local area.

The partnership brings together all the agencies in Lancashire which provide the SEND services for children, young people, their parents and carers. It ensures everybody can work together to provide the best outcomes for children, young people and their families, with representatives who use the service.

For further information and regular updates about the changes taking place please see the SEND local offer website, view their event listings on Eventbrite or view their Facebook page.

In response, a SEND helpline has been set up with a view to improving communication with families and key partners. Lines are open 9:00-5:00 Mon-Fri.
